Derby Dames

Last Saturday night we drove out to Marina to watch the Beasts of Eden take on the Seabright Sirens in women's flat track roller derby.

The Beasts of Eden are an all star roller derby team,
the best of the Cannery Rollers and the Babes of Wrath.

It was awesome and I loved it!

I felt like I was in a movie.

Before the "bout" began they welcomed all the first time derby fans and ran a sample "jam" so that we would know what was going on. They explained the rules and demonstrated what is legal and what is illegal - but still fun to watch.

Here's a quick rundown on the rules:
I love that they played in an old wooden hockey facility off the beaten track.

I love listening to the crowd hollering for their hometown heroines.

I love that the tickets were cheap and every seat had a great view.

And I love that my mom was silently freaking out, fearing that I would decide to join this lovely sport.

No need to worry, Mama.

At least not for now :)

Seamstress Strikes Back

Remember this fabric?
Three semi-straight lines later here it is again!

Not too bad as long as you don't look too close at the inside seams.
But seriously, who ever looks at that anyway?
Thanks to Jacey for letting me borrow her "dust collector!"

Now it's time to figure something out to cover those windows...

Saturday Morning Treat

Waking up way too early on a Saturday morning is okay with me.

As long as it's met with a cup of perfectly frothed cream and a little bit of coffee.

Mmmmmmmmmm...

Plus, this favorite Anthropologie mug reminds me of my dear friend Margie :)

Farmer's Market

Yesterday mom and I spent a lovely afternoon in Monterey.

Just before heading home we happened upon the weekly farmer's market downtown on Alvarado Street.

Live music, fresh tortillas, homemade jams, fresh cut flowers and produce, olive oils and balsamic vinegars for tasting - yum! Handcrafted jewelry, knitted scarves and slippers, you name it. The streets were packed.

We shared a carnitas taco and I found myself a perfect butternut squash for making bisque.

What better place to hit up a farmer's market than the Salinas Valley?

* I wish I had brought my camera along; instead I stole these photos from the internet :)

Happy Window

Sad window...

Plus ugly pelmet found for two bucks at Last Chance Mercantile...

Plus ten billion staples removed by dad and myself last night...

Plus five dollar tablecloth snagged on clearance at Marshalls...

Plus a custom upholstery job by Jason...

We've got ourselves a happy window!

And another project checked off the list!
